How does Flitto work?

This platform (website and app: Android, iOS smartphones, and iPad) was founded by the Korean Entrepreneur Simon Lee. It was launched on September 1, 2012. Their philosophy is to crowdsource the translation requirements that are submitted to the site. Crowdsourcing is a specific sourcing model in which Flitto uses contributions from users to obtain needed translations. At the time of writing this post, Flitto had more than 7 million users registered worldwide. And they have done more than 30 million translations.

Flitto Crowdsourced

Flitto is structured this way: it has three sections, and once in a while a fourth section is opened.

a.) Crowdsourced: users submit short texts or images that need to be translated. Usually, homeworks, signs at tourist attractions or product specifications. Because all the translations are human-powered, users also ask for translations of colloquial sayings in this section.

b.) 1:1 Pro Translation: to translate in this section, you need to approve an exam that Flitto gives you. Once you are a qualified Flitto translator for a specific pair of languages, you’ll start translating requirements submitted by other users. The price is established by mutual agreement.

c.) Discovery: twitter accounts of big news companies, politicians, artists, and athletes are translated here. There is also content published by Flitto themselves that can be translated in this section.

d.) Event: every now and then, Flitto opens special events where you can translate phrases or record them. The payment is higher during these events.

Flitto Discovery

You can earn money while translating with Flitto.

You can earn money with every single translation you do with Flitto in the Discovery section. On Crowdsourced and 1:1 Pro Translation sections, your translation needs to be approved. Flitto allows you to cash out what you earn while doing translations in a diversity of ways. You can receive your money thru Paypal, buy Amazon Gift Cards or buy articles in the Flitto Store.

You will certainly not become rich using Flitto, but you can make some money while you translate to Italian or to any of the other languages that are contained in the platform.

How much money can you earn with Flitto?

Flitto works with a point system, where 1 USD equals 1,450 points. When you participate in an event, for each sentence you translate, you earn 100 points (0,07 USD). So to earn 1.03 USD you need to translate 15 sentences. In the events where you are required to record your voice in Italian or any other target language, the payments are the same as for translations. For each sentence recorded, you earn 0.07 USD.

If you translate the requirements submitted by other users in the Crowdsourced section, and your translation is chosen as the best, then you earn between 100 points (0.07 USD) and about 4,000 points (2.76 USD). The number of points is correlated with the length of what is required to be translated. The minimum payment, if the requirement is one sentence, is 100 points. There is not an upper limit to the payment or a limited number of sentences that can be requested to be translated. During the time I have been using Flitto, I have seen quite frequently translations in this range of points (100 to 4,000 points).

If you translate the tweets of your favorite athletes, politicians or artists, or the news accounts you follow, you earn 10 points for each tweet you translate. If you translate content published by Flitto, you earn 20 points for each tweet.

UPDATE: since January 2018 the Discovery section were you could translate tweets is not paying the 10 points reward it used to, neither the content published by Flitto the 20 points. I’ll continue commenting on this point when the platform states if this is a temporary situation or a permanent condition. All the other sections continue working and paying fine as always have been.

To withdraw your money to an Amazon Gift Card, you need to accumulate 10 USD. To withdraw using PayPal you need 35 USD.

Here is a table resuming the payments you can receive from Flitto.

And here is another table with the ways you can cash out.

Flitto cashout

Flitto is a trusted site.

You can search the internet for negative reviews on Flitto and you will not find them. I personally have been using this site since March 2016, and they have paid correctly each withdraw I have made. Flitto does not have an Affiliate Program, so there are no affiliate links. That means that Flitto does not pay me anything if you join them thru my site. I really recommend this site if you are at an intermediate level or beyond in your second language. Flitto is the right site for you if:

1.) You want to practice your Italian skills or any other language that you have been learning.

2.) You want to be informed of what is happening around the world while translating the news on Twitter.

3.) Or you simply want to earn some bucks following the Twitter accounts of your favorite athletes, sports teams or artists (this section is not currently paying as cited in the UPDATE above).

    1. Hello, Françoise! Thank you very much for stopping by! I greatly appreciate your comment. Just a quick update: since January 2018 the Discovery section were you can translate tweets from accounts of big news companies, politicians, artists, and athletes is not paying the 10 points reward it used to. I’ll continue commenting on this point when the platform states if this is a temporary situation or a permanent condition.
But in all the other sections, it continues working and paying as it has always been.
It’s an honor to have you and you’re more than welcome to continue visiting us. All the best! 🙂

      1. Hi, I am one of Flitto’s translators. Actually I’ve asked Flitto regarding this matter. And their answer is… Nope. They won’t give points for translating Discovery section anymore. It is due to many violations by fraudulent users who make use of translation software for translating content in this section. So the only hope to earn income from Flitto is when your translation is selected in Crowdsource section; or when you have became translator Pro 1:1 and complete the translation job submitted by a requestor.
